Fern wants Tom to help her escape her sheltered life by creating a sexual scandal. Later that night, at the maharajah's palace party, Tom sees Edwina, an old girlfriend who is now the titled wife of Lord Albert Esketh. But no sooner are they reunited than Lady Edwina is up to her usual tricks.
Based on the Louise Bromfield novel, The Rains Came is set in the mythical Ranchipur, India, where English rule exhibits itself in the presence of upper class snobs, a minority who view the Indians as servants and peasants. Among the British is dissolute aristocrat Thomas Ransome (George Brent), who has a reputation as a drunkard and a womanizer.
