- 2:05Biden struggles, Trump spouts falsehoods in debateReuters VideosSTORY: :: A hoarse President Joe Biden has a shaky start in his debate with Donald Trump A hoarse-sounding President Joe Biden verbally stumbled early on in the CNN presidential debate with Donald Trump while Trump rattled off a series of attacks, including a number of falsehoods. :: June 27, 2024 :: Atlanta, Georgia Biden: "When I (unclear) is to fix the taxes. For example, we have a 1000 trillionaires in America, I mean billionaires in America. And what's happening? They are in a situation where they, in fact, pay 8.2% in taxes. If they just pay 24%, 25%, either one of those numbers, it may raise $500 million, billion dollars, I should say, in a ten year period. We would be able to right wipe out his debt, we'd be to be able to help make sure that all the things we need to do - childcare, elder care, making sure that we continue to strengthen our health care system, making sure that we're able to make every single solitary patient eligible for what I've been able to do with, with, with the COVID, excuse me, with - dealing with - everything we had to do with - look - if - we finally beat Medicare. Moderator: "Thank you, President Biden. President Trump." Trump : "He was right. He did beat Medicaid, beaten to death and is destroying Medicare." :: Trump said he would accept election results but claimed, without evidence, there was fraud in 2020 Trump: "If it's a fair and legal and good election. Absolutely. I would have much rather accepted these, but the. The fraud and everything else was ridiculous. And if you want, we'll have a news conference on it in a week or we'll have another one of these on in a week. But I will. Absolutely. There's nothing I'd rather do. It would be much easier for me to do that. Then I'm running again. I wasn't really going to run until I saw the horrible job he did. He's destroying our country." Biden: "There is no evidence of that at all. And I tell you what, I doubt you. You'll accept it because you're such a whiner. The idea if you lose again, you accept it anything. You can't stand the loss. Something snapped in you and you lost the last time. :: White House officials said Biden had a cold, but his performance may raise age concerns "We've made significant progress from the debacle that was left by President Trump in his last term."10 hours ago

- 1:26Biden and Trump proxies talk up the debate candidatesReuters VideosSTORY: :: Proxies of Biden and Trump contrast the two candidates before the CNN debate :: June 27, 2024 :: Atlanta, Georgia :: Gavin Newsom, Democratic Governor of California “You know, if he shows up congruent, strong, confident, it puts it to rest. I mean, look, at the end of the day, you’ve got two older candidates. Trump's only three years younger. And I think the contrast is really around values and vision and ideas. You've got someone who wants to roll back most of the progress last half century and put America in reverse, on voting rights, civil rights, LGBTQ rights, women's rights, access to abortion, contraception, and someone that wants to own the future. Fresh air of progress as it relates to work he's done on Chips and Science Act, infrastructure, etc. So to me, it's really about the age of ideas, the staleness of Trump's ideas compared to the vibrancy and vision of President Biden's.” :: Byron Donalds, Republican Congressman “The American people realize when something is fake, when something is phony, they know when the fix is in, they know when something is political. That's what happened to Donald Trump in Lower Manhattan [REFERRING TO HIS CONVICTION IN HIS FRAUD TRIAL]. This was a violation of his constitutional rights, but it was also interfering in a presidential election. And so, I think the American people have already spoken on that. I don't think it's going to really weigh in at all because at the end of the day, the American people are worried about the future of this country, not the political games that are played by the Democrats.”14 hours ago
- 1:19Rival protesters on Biden-Trump presidential debateReuters VideosSTORY: ::June 28, 2024 ::Rival protesters gather in Atlanta before the presidential debate between President Joe Biden and Donald Trump ::Atlanta, Georgia Queen K/Local activist "I'm here today because we have a debate, a national presidential debate between Biden and Trump. And I am heavily concerned one of the candidates has 34 felonies and should not even be allowed to stand on the stage, let alone run for presidency. And then we have another president who continues to ignore a lot of the concerns in this community and at the same time needs our vote." Kishana Holland/Biden supporter "I'm out here today for Joe Biden because he is the clear only choice in this election. We may have our, you know, problems. We may feel he may not be young enough. He may not be you know, his strength may not be there, but he's the only clear choice in this election. I don't want my reproductive rights for myself and my daughter to go back." Jimmy/Trump supporter "Well, inflation was very low on his administration. Groceries, gas, housing, everything was low when he was in office. Unemployment rate was even lower here in America as well, among all the other people. Among teenagers as well, it was low." Biden, 81, and Trump, 78, will be under pressure to display their command of issues and avoid verbal stumbles as they seek a breakout moment in a race that opinion polls show has been deadlocked for months. The 90-minute televised debate, the first between a sitting president and a former one, will air at 9 p.m. ET (0100 GMT on Friday) on CNN and takes place far earlier than normal - more than four months before the Nov. 5 Election Day. It comes at a moment of profound polarization and deep-seated anxiety among voters about the state of American politics.15 hours ago

- 1:19Coup attempt highlights risk to Bolivian democracyReuters VideosSTORY: This is the moment Bolivian president Luis Arce confronted Army general Juan Jose Zuniga, who led a failed effort to overthrow the government... ...after attempting to storm the presidential palace and ramming the entrance with an armored vehicle. Hours later, Zuniga was seen handcuffed on live TV after his arrest for the failed coup attempt, which has raised fears that democracy in Bolivia remains at risk. On Thursday, it was revealed by a senior interior minister that the Bolivian government had intelligence that a coup attempt could occur… …and that Arce had received reports about "destabilization attempts.” Arce has since slammed the coup attempt and swiftly named a new top general. According to a government official, Zuniga had been told a day before the coup attempt that he would be stripped of his position. The former commander is now among 17 people who have been detained, so far, and could face prison terms of between 15 and 30 years. Wednesday’s events uncovered the tense political fault lines in the South American country ahead of a presidential election next year. Arce's socialist party is split between backing him and his former mentor-turned-political-rival, ex-President Evo Morales. Zuniga had recently said that Morales should not be able to run again for president and had threatened to block him if he attempted to do so.19 hours ago

- 2:30Sunak and Starmer clash in testy final UK TV debateReuters VideosSTORY: Britain's final debate before next week's general election was a testy standoff with current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, whose party is trailing in the polls going head-to-head with Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party. Polling puts Labour far ahead of Sunak's Conservatives, by around 20 points, and on Wednesday, the prime minister made a last-ditch attack on Starmer, accusing him of being dishonest on issues from tax and women’s rights to immigration. Starmer fired back saying that Sunak was too rich to understand the concerns of most ordinary Britons. A snap YouGov poll said the debate had been a 50/50 tie. "They cannot be returned to where they came from, can they, Prime Minister, if he wants to correct that, now is his chance to do that" On immigration – a top concern for British voters, Sunak rejected Starmer’s argument that he would try and return migrants to their home countries saying many are from Iran, Syria and Afganistan: “Are you going to sit down with the Iranian ayatollahs? Are you going to try and do a deal with the Taliban? It's completely nonsensical what you are saying, right? You are taking people for fools. I think that these people should not stay in our country. They will be on planes to Rwanda.” Starmer also argued the country was exhausted after 14 years of Conservative "chaos", and that he would better understand the challenges of many families who have struggled under soaring inflation and a cost of living crisis. Polls indicate Labour are on course to win the election with a whopping majority. Sunak's campaign has struggled since the beginning. He launched the election in pouring rain in Downing Street and was heavily criticized for failing to attend a D-Day memorial event. Sir Keir Starmer also attacked the prime minister over a recent betting scandal, which saw five Conservative party officials investigated over bets that were placed on the timing of an early election: "Because this isn't just, you know, what's happened this week, last week in the Gambling Commission, we saw Partygate earlier in this parliament. The prime minister himself was convicted and fined for breaking the rules, which he brought in and imposed on everybody else.” However Starmer has also faced criticism at public events, too. He's been accused by voters of sticking to a script and being robotic, and failing to give enough information on how he would fund much-needed improvements to public services. - 2:08Bolivia coup fails, top general arrestedReuters VideosSTORY: What appeared to be a coup attempt in Bolivia failed on Wednesday. A top general leading armed forces allied to him tried to storm the presidential palace in La Paz, with eyewitness video showing an armored vehicle ram palace doors and soldiers rush in. But they quickly pulled back in the evening, and the general, Juan Jose Zuniga, was arrested hours later on live TV, taken away, and later, replaced. A Reuters witness saw soldiers withdraw from the central Plaza Murillo square, home to the presidential palace and Congress. People continued to gather, heeding an earlier call from President Luis Arce to resist the coup attempt. "This is a historic afternoon. Not just because the people have re-taken Plaza Murillo but because of a failed coup attempt. I believe the Bolivian people should be at ease. All Bolivians are uniting." Arce himself later appeared from a balcony and thanked the public. "It fills us with bravery, courage to keep resisting to keep on resisting any coup attempt. because Bolivia deserves its democracy, which has been won in the streets, and with blood brothers and sisters." The President later swore in José Wilson Sanchez as the military commander to replace Zuniga, and called for calm and order to be restored. Tension is building in Bolivia ahead of general elections next year. Zuniga has recently hit out at leftist ex-President Evo Morales, saying he should not be allowed to return and threatening to block him if he does. Morales is planning a return to power by running against Arce, his onetime socialist ally. Zuniga had also spoken to reporters in the square saying that anger was growing in the landlocked country... Bolivia has been battling an economic slump with depleted central bank reserves as well as pressure on the boliviano currency as exports of gas dry up. The public prosecutor's office said it would launch a criminal investigation against Zuniga and others involved in the attempted coup.1 day ago

- 1:44Bolivia’s president says military attempted coupReuters VideosSTORY: Heavily armed Bolivian soldiers and armored vehicles took over the capital's central square Wednesday, home to the presidential palace and Congress, in what the country's president called an attempted coup. As troops surrounded Plaza Murillo, a military commander can be heard telling soldiers to "stand firm." Bolivian President Luis Arce demanded the military action be called off, denouncing what he called an "irregular mobilization" of some army units in La Paz. In a video posted on Facebook, Arce addressed the nation alongside government officials, calling on citizens to “mobilize” for democracy and against the coup. According to a Reuters witness, an armored vehicle rammed into a door of the presidential palace and soldiers rushed in. Former leader Evo Morales, who has publicly split with Arce although both belong to the same socialist movement, accused top General Juan Jose Zuniga of plotting a coup. Tensions have been building in Bolivia ahead of the general elections in 2025, with Morales planning to run against Arce, creating a rift in the ruling socialist party and wider political uncertainty. Many do not want a return of Morales, who governed from 2006-2019 when he was ousted amongst widespread protests and replaced by an interim conservative government. Arce then won election in 2020. The landlocked South American country is also battling an economic slump with depleted central bank reserves and pressure on the boliviano currency as gas exports have dried up. The United States said it was closely monitoring the situation and urged calm and restraint.2 days ago
