Plainsong is a novel by Kent Haruf. Set in the fictional town of Holt, Colorado , it tells the interlocking stories of some of the inhabitants. The title comes from a type of unadorned music sung in Christian churches, and is a reference to both the Great Plains setting and the simple style of the writing.
Plainsong was the exclusive form of Christian church music until the ninth century, and the introduction of polyphony. [2] The monophonic chants of plainsong have a non-metric rhythm. [3] Their rhythms are generally freer than the metered rhythm of later Western music, and they are sung without musical accompaniment.
