Eleni is the 1985 film adaptation of the memoir Eleni by Greek-American journalist Nicholas Gage. Directed by Peter Yates with a screenplay by Steve Tesich, the film stars John Malkovich, Kate Nelligan, Linda Hunt and Glenne Headly.
Eleni. "Eleni" is based on the true story of a New York Times reporter who went searching for his past in Greece. The reporter's name is Nicholas Gage. As a very young boy, he is sent to America to join relatives at the end of World War II.
Saint Eleni, or Helena as she is mostly known in English, was the mother of Konstantine the Great, the Emperor of Byzantine Empire. Her full name was Flavia Iulia Helena Augusta, and she was consort of Emperor Constantius, although coming from a very poor family.

In 1948, after arranging for her children to flee to America to escape the turbulence of the Greek Civil War, Eleni Gage (Kate Nelligan) is executed by the communists occupying her village.
