Nikita Mikhalkov's adaptation of Bolodin's 1958 play "Five Evenings" is a wonderful Chekhovian film on interrupted love, dashed hopes and dreams, and unfulfilled happiness.
The five Evenings or installments - there are cuts delineating each evening - reveal many twists and turns in a story of two people that haven’t seen each other in awhile; it’s not exactly a predictable reunion on any given evening.
