Saka no Ue no Kumo (坂の上の雲), or "Clouds Above the Hill" is a Japanese historical novel by Shiba Ryōtarō originally published serially from 1968 to 1972 in eight volumes. A three-year NHK television special drama series based on the novel and also entitled Saka no Ue no Kumo was shown in thirteen episodes from 2009 to 2011.
Saka no ue no kumo: With Masahiro Motoki, Aleksandr Veremyuk, Hiroshi Abe, Teruyuki Kagawa. The 19th Century was a turbulent one for Japan. Enduring the throes of change brought about by the Meiji era, it still struggled to join the world and be considered a "civilized, modern nation."

Plot. "Saka no ue no kumo" centers around Yoshifuru Akiyama ( Hiroshi Abe ), his older brother Saneyuki Akiyama ( Masahiro Motoki ), and poet Masaoka Shiki ( Teruyuki Kagawa) during the Russo-Japanese War. The drama depicts Japan's modernization in the Meiji era through the help of the Akiyama brothers.
