Gert Fröbe war der Sohn des alkoholkranken Seilermeisters, Lederhändlers und Schusters Otto Johannes Fröbe (1886–1947) und dessen Frau Helene Alma (1884–1972), geb. Sagewitz, die Schneiderin war. Seinem künstlerischen Drang folgend, begann er als Kulissenschieber und Handlanger im Stadttheater Zwickau.
Fröbe gained fame in one of the first German films made after the War, called Berliner Ballade ( The Ballad of Berlin, 1948). His character's name, "Otto Normalverbraucher" ( lit. Otto Average Consumer), became the German term equivalent to "Average Joe". [4]
His father, Karl-Otto Fröbe, earned his living as a master rope maker, leather dealer and shoemaker; his mother, Alma, was a housewife. After graduating from high school, he trained as a stage painter at the Dresden State Theater. Inspired by acting, Fröbe became a student of Erich Ponto in 1935.
