Feb 9, 2021 · SAN FRANCISCO, CA (February 9, 2021) — After nearly 20 years leading the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), Neal Benezra, the Helen and Charles Schwab Director, today announced that he will begin the transition from this role and assist the museum with its succession plan and international search for a new director.
Born, raised, and educated in the Bay Area, Neal Benezra received degrees in the history of art and in political science from the University of California–Berkeley, and a PhD in the history of art from Stanford University.
Neil Benezra is a sound designer, re-recording mixer, and composer for film, theater, and museum and gallery installations. He has collaborated with such internationally acclaimed directors and artists as Dara Birnbaum, Louise Bourgeois, Abel Ferrara, Richard Foreman, Nan Goldin, Joan Jonas, and Laurie Simmons.

Neil Benezra is a composer and sound designer for film, museum, gallery, and theater. He is currently a visiting assistant professor and lecturer in the Film and Video, Continuing and Professional Studies department at Pratt Institute.
