The BMW E34 is the third generation of the BMW 5 Series, which was produced from November 2, 1987, until 1996. Initially launched as a sedan in January 1988, the E34 also saw a "Touring" station wagon (estate) body style added in September 1992, a first for the 5 Series.

BMW 540i - E34. (1992 to 1996) BMW introduced the 540i variant of their E34 5 Series in 1992. Powered by a 4.0L V8 engine, the 540i was one of the highest end variants of the E34. Due to the end of M5 sales in non-European markets in 1993, a special North American variant, the 540i M-Sport was introduced in 1995.
The E34 M5 was powered by BMW's S38 3.5L inline 6 engine, but starting in 1992, European models received a larger, more powerful version of the S38. The E34 M5 was also the first generation of M5 to feature a station wagon ( Touring) variant, offered alongside the Sedan.
