The Best of Spirit — originally released in 1973 and now expanded to sixteen tracks — features a superb distillation of the band’s first four albums. What it loses in some of the conceptual aspects of the group’s releases, it makes up for with perfect concision. The band’s first hit I’ve Got a Line on You is undoubtedly its most recognizable song.
Spirt was a mystical cultish band, able to weave insightful lyrics with visionary music, leaving bassist Mark Andes to say, “Our reputation as an idiosyncratic psychedelic jazz group meant that we were far more influential than we were commercially successful.”
