Alexander Black was a self-taught publisher, court reporter, photographer, and author who created a projected and narrated feature-length production using a magic lantern and dissolving slides in 1894. He is considered the grandfather of picture plays and the first president of the department of photography at the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences.
In 1894, one year before the Lumière brothers patented their cinematograph, the journalist, photographer and writer Alexander Black developed the picture play system. This fused images together to create a new form of audiovisual narration with which he aspired to create “an illusion of reality”.
