Holland was born January 17, 1967, in Manhattan, New York. His mother, Margaret, was a homemaker, and his father, Nick, owned two stores in Harlem. Around the age of 12, his parents moved the family to Mount Vernon, New York for two years and then to Greenburgh, New Yorkin Westchester County where he graduated from Greenburgh High School.
In 1986, Holland joined the U. S. Army where he received seven service medals and commendations. After being honorably discharged in October 1988, he returned to New York to complete his undergraduate education at Fordham University.
