He attended New Lincoln School, a Manhattan private school, from kindergarten through high school. He attended Beloit College in Wisconsin, and later transferred to six different colleges including New York University, Morris Brown, and Hunter College.

    • Received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the News & Documentary Emmy Awards. In 2016, The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced that Nelson would be the honoree of the annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards’ Lifetime Achievement.
    • Co-founder and Executive Director of Firelight Media - a nonprofit focusing on supporting emerging documentations. Founded in 1998 by Nelson, Firelight Media is a premier destination for non-fiction cinema by and about communities of color.
