Stanley Earl Nelson Jr. (born June 7, 1951) is an American documentary filmmaker and a MacArthur Fellow known as a director, writer and producer of documentaries examining African-American history and experiences. [1] [2] He is a recipient of the 2013 National Humanities Medal from President Obama. He has won three Primetime Emmy Awards. [3]
Apr 3, 2006 · Veteran filmmaker Stanley Earl Nelson, Jr., was born on June 8, 1951, in New York City. He attended New Lincoln School, a Manhattan private school, from kindergarten through high school. He attended Beloit College in Wisconsin, and later transferred to six different colleges including New York University, Morris Brown, and Hunter College.
- Recipient of the 2013 National Humanities Medal from President Obama. The National Humanities Medal, inaugurated in 1997, honors individuals or groups whose work has deepened the nation's understanding of the humanities and broadened our citizens' engagement with history, literature, languages, philosophy, and other humanities subjects.
- Recipient of multiple Primetime Emmy Awards. In 2003, Nelson won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for Nonfiction Programming for PBS’ The American Experience, for the episode The Murder Of Emmett Till.
- Received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the News & Documentary Emmy Awards. In 2016, The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced that Nelson would be the honoree of the annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards’ Lifetime Achievement.
- Co-founder and Executive Director of Firelight Media - a nonprofit focusing on supporting emerging documentations. Founded in 1998 by Nelson, Firelight Media is a premier destination for non-fiction cinema by and about communities of color.
