MG Rover Group was a British carmaker that existed between 2000 and 2005. It was the last domestically owned mass-production car manufacturer in the British motor industry. The company was formed when BMW sold the car-making and engine manufacturing assets of the original Rover Group to Phoenix Venture Holdings in 2000.
The Rover Group plc was the British vehicle manufacturing conglomerate known as "BL plc" until 1986 (formerly British Leyland), which had been a state-owned company since 1975. It initially included the Austin Rover Group car business (comprising the Austin, Rover, Mini and MG marques), Land Rover Group, Freight Rover vans and Leyland Trucks.
Under Rover Group (1992–2000) In 1995, the MG F became the first all-new MG since the MGB. After BL became the Rover Group in 1986, ownership of the MG marque passed to British Aerospace in 1988 and then in 1994 to BMW.
MG Rover Group was the last British-owned volume car manufacturer, but collapsed in 2005 after being sold to a consortium of local businessmen. The Phoenix Four, as they became known, enriched themselves and their families, while the company faced tax evasion, bribery, mismanagement and corruption allegations.
