Jan Nisar Akhtar (18 February 1914 – 19 August 1976) was an Indian poet of Urdu ghazals and nazms, and a part of the Progressive Writers' Movement, who was also a lyricist for Bollywood. [1]

Unlike Shakeel, who was the first to venture into poetry (only a distant uncle was a poet), Jan Nisar Akhtar’s father Muztar Khairabadi was poet as was his father’s elder brother, Bismil Khairabadi.
