David T. de Varona, an athlete and coach whose love of sports inspired and enriched the lives of countless Bay Area youths, including his Olympic gold medalist daughter, died Oct. 24 from cancer. Mr. de Varona, a member of the 1938 Rose Bowl championship football team and a Cal Hall of Fame crew inductee, was 82.
