Jul 12, 2019 · New London — Beatrice Castle Kirk Gray, 96, a noncombatant survivor of Pearl Harbor and Watergate, died July 10, 2019, at Fleet Landing in Atlantic Beach, Fla., where she lived for 30 years. A third-generation kama’aina, Bea was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on May 14, 1923, to Addison Erwin Kirk and Alice Moore Kirk.
In 1945, Gray visited Beatrice Castle Kirk (1923–2019), the widow of his Naval Academy classmate, Lieutenant Commander Edward Emmet DeGarmo (1917–1945). They were married in 1946. He adopted her two sons, Alan and Ed; and they had two of their own, Patrick and Stephen.
During his time as the executive officer of the USS Caiman, he met Beatrice Castle Kirk DeGarmo, a widow of a former classmate lost in action. The two married, and Gray adopted his wife’s two sons; the family soon grew with the births of two additional sons.
Cattleya Beatrice Castle Kirk is an orchid hybrid originated by Dalton in 1940. It is a cross of C. Asbury x C. R. Cadwalader.
