Toscana
The story starts with Alyss, Halt, and Will in Toscanawith Selethen, overseeing and acting as a neutral third-party for a treaty that is being forged between Arrida and Toscana. Will, Halt, and Selethen are watching a demonstration of the Toscan army's fighting style, which is akin to the ancient Roman army's way of fighting. Ran-Koshi is a largely natural fortress in northern Nihon-Ja, made of high mountains. It appears in The Emperor of Nihon-Ja, when Shigeru needs somewhere to weather out the winter, Ran-Koshi proved ideal as it was defensible and located in an ideal location.
Emperor Shigeru Motodato is the Emperor of Nihon-Ja. He is one of Horace's best friends and allies after they assisting in stopping a rebellion led by an ambitious lord of the arrogant Senshi class, Arisaka, as well as a close friend of Will Treaty, Alyss Mainwaring and Princess Cassandra.
Pursued by the rebel leader and master swordsman Arisaka, Horace and Shigeru flee along with Shigeru's cousin and guard Shukin. Their only hope is to find the fabled fortress of Ran-Koshi, which is mentioned in a legend and said to have impossibly high walls.
