Francis Hopkinson (October 2, 1737 – May 9, 1791) was an American Founding Father, lawyer, jurist, author, and composer. He designed Continental paper money and two early versions of flags, one for the United States and one for the United States Navy.

Hopkinson is best known for his role as an ardent patriot during the American Revolution. After studying law under Benjamin Chew, he served as secretary to the Pennsylvanian Indian commission, as customs collector for the port of Newcastle in Delaware, and then as a New Jersey Provincial Assemblyman.
Francis Hopkinson was one of the 56 signers of the U.S. Declaration of Independence and is also credited to have designed the first American flag. He was a highly educated man who had the honour of being the first Graduate of the College of Philadelphia.
