Oct 24, 1989 · Smithereens 11 (the title a sly send-up of the Rat Pack film classic Oceans 11) sees DiNizio’s razor-sharp observations focusing on the more upbeat and romantic side of relationships, like “Kiss Your Tears Away,” a beautiful ballad, and “A Girl Like You,” the album’s hard-rocking first single.
The title and artwork for the album 11 were a nod to the original 1960 Ocean's 11 film. The Smithereens starred as themselves and were featured as entertainment in the indoor beach party scene of the 1986 Troma film Class of Nuke 'Em High, playing the song "Much Too Much". The soundtrack to the film was not released until 2014.
The Smithereens’ 11 was actually not the band’s eleventh album but rather its third. Its title was inspired by the 1960 Rat Pack heist film Oceans 11, starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. But it was equally a nod to This is Spinal Tap. “This one goes up to 11,” guitarist Jim Babjak told an interviewer at the time.
