In addition to his work as a bandleader Parlan was known for his contributions to the Charles Mingus recordings Mingus Ah Um and Blues & Roots.

On the recording, Gordon and trumpeter Freddie Hubbard were out front, backed by Parlan, George Tucker on bass and Al Harewood on drums.
