Ntozake Shange (/ ˌ ɛ n t oʊ ˈ z ɑː k i ˈ ʃ ɑː ŋ ɡ eɪ / EN-toh-ZAH-kee SHAHNG-Ê; [1] October 18, 1948 – October 27, 2018) was an American playwright and poet. [2] As a Black feminist, she addressed issues relating to race and Black power in much of her work.
Shange would go on to a successful triple career as an educator, performer/director, and writer whose work drew heavily on her experiences of being a Black female in America. Shange was perhaps most famous for her play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow Is Enuf (1975).
