A native of Winterport, Maine, James was the son of Otis and Maria Thompson Kaler. In 1861, at the age of 13, James Otis Kaler went to Boston and eventually obtained a job as reporter with the Boston Journal.

James Otis Kaler was a journalist who in 1902 became superintendent of South Portland schools. In 1880-1881, he serialized the story of Toby Tyler in Harper's Young People Magazine. It was a literary success. Subsequently, Kaler (under the pseudonym James Otis) wrote over 175 children's books.
It became something of a classic among American boys and girls who dreamed of running away to join the circus and remained popular for generations. It was James Otis Kaler's first book and also his best known and most successful. The original book contains 30 pen and ink drawings by W. A. Rogers (1854-1931).
