It was written in response to Theodore Reik's being prosecuted for being a non-medical, or lay, analyst in Austria.

In addition, the work encompasses all the different aspects of Freud, philosopher, humanist a scientist and a physician.

From early times he held strongly to the opinion that psycho-analysis was not to be regarded as purely a concern of the medical profession.
