Leslie Hough was born in 1925 in Lancashire. He graduated in 1946 from the University of Manchester with an Honors degree in Chemistry. He commenced research on carbohydrates with Professor (later Sir Edmund) E. L. Hirst and Dr. (later Professor) J.K.N. Jones, took the M.Sc. in 1947 and completed his Ph.D. in 1949.
