She debuted on Broadway in 1941 at the age of twenty where she appeared in Maxwell Anderson's Eve of Saint Mark and Eva le Gallienne's Cherry Orchard.

Manley has had a unique itinerary since her debut on Broadway at the age of twenty. In the 1960s, as a founding member of the San Francisco Actor's Workshop, she helped present the first West Coast productions of writers like Beckett and Genet; she was also the first actress in America to play the role of Brecht’s Mother Courage.
