The album holds three distinct sets of images that were acquired by Commodore Matthew C. Perry during his 1830-1832 service in the Mediterranean Squadron, and presented to his eldest daughter Sarah. The first set consists of 48 full-length portraits of residents of modern-day Gibraltar, Spain, France, and Italy, in typical dress of the early 1830s.
