"Le Chef-d'œuvre inconnu" (English: "The Unknown Masterpiece") is a short story by Honoré de Balzac. It was first published in the newspaper L'Artiste with the title " Maître Frenhofer " (English: "Master Frenhofer") in August 1831 .

La nouvelle de Honoré de Balzac, Le Chef d'œuvre inconnu, fut tout d'abord publié en 1831 dans le journal l'Artiste sous le titre de "Maître Frenhofer". La nouvelle sera par la suite intégrée à La Comédie Humaine (1846).
Balzac’s tale of a misunderstood artist who works in secret on an “unknown masterpiece,” appealed to Picasso. He made unusual line and dot drawings, which he later heightened with crayon, dedicating it to the book’s first owner, art dealer Henri Matarasso (1892–1985). Status.
