Biography. Mangle Minthorne, who was born Mangle Minthorne Thompson but dropped his surname, was born to Arietta Minthorne Thompkins and Gilbert Livingston Thompson. During the Mexican War, he served as third assistant engineer aboard Commodore Matthew C. Perry's ship, the Mississippi.
In 1818 Gilbert L. Thompson married Arietta Minthorne Tompkins Thompson (1800-1837), who was the daughter of Daniel D. Tompkins (1774-1825), the sixth US Vice President from 1817 to 1825.
