Archduchess Charlotte of Austria (German: Erzherzogin Charlotte von Österreich; 1 March 1921 – 23 July 1989) was a daughter of Emperor Charles I of Austria and his wife Princess Zita of Bourbon-Parma. She was also known by the name Charlotte de Bar while a welfare worker in the United States from 1943 to 1956.
As the wife of Archduke Maximilian of Austria, Viceroy of Lombardy–Venetia and later Emperor of Mexico, she became Archduchess of Austria (in 1857) and Empress of Mexico (in 1864). She was daughter, granddaughter, sister, sister in-law, cousin and wife of reigning or deposed sovereigns throughout Europe and Mexico.
Starting in October 1943, Archduchess Charlotte, sometimes using the alias Charlotte de Bar, began work as a social worker devoting the next 12 years of her life to working for the Catholic charity Caritas in Manhattan’s deprived East Harlem district.
