May 29, 2020 · “The day that I met her, she was complaining [about how] she hated to wake up early, but she had an interview with the head of ICE in Colorado,” recalls Savage of the tireless subject of her new film “Welcome Strangers” who offers post-release housing and support for recently released detainees.
Executive producer and co-creator of MTV’s hit series “16 and Pregnant” and “Teen Mom,” Colorado native Dia Sokol Savage is also an independent filmmaker who directed Sorry, Thanks (2009) and produced films for Greta Gerwig, Andrew Bujalski, Joe Swanberg, and Alex Karpovsky.
Dia Sokol Savage directed the award-winning Welcome Strangers, following asylum seekers in the moments after they are released from detention. She also directed and co-wrote the scripted feature Sorry, Thanks, which premiered at SXSW and starred Wiley Wiggins (Dazed and Confused).
