Marie Teresa Ríos (November 9, 1917 – October 17, 1999), known as Tere Ríos, was an American writer and the author of the 1965 book The Fifteenth Pelican, which was the basis for the 1960s Screen Gems television sitcom The Flying Nun.
The novel, written by Tere Rios, a mother of a soldier in Viet Nam, who was killed, wrote this book, published in 1965 -- before her son was killed. Her dedication might seem prescient: "For The Rock and the chicken and sugar people of NamCan" -- The Rock is her son Captain Humbert R. Versace Jr.

24 reviews 5 followers. October 28, 2023. Actually a very charming, entertaining, and heart-felt short novel. The plot is basically the pilot of The Flying Nun, but is less funny (although the writing is certainly humorous), and much more emotion-laden.
