Slow Turning is singer-songwriter John Hiatt's ninth album, released in 1988. It provided Hiatt's only significant radio hit with the title track. The single "Slow Turning" was also featured in the 2002 motion picture drama The Rookie which starred Dennis Quaid.

Feb 23, 2023 · However, it was the 1988 release Slow Turning that cemented Hiatt’s status as one of the premier songwriters of the 20th century. The album featured classics like “Tennessee Plates” and “Angel Eyes,” and its title track earned Hiatt his first and only Top-10 single.

He couldn't get them back for Slow Turning, so he had his touring band play on it, including Sonny Landreth on guitar and Kenneth Blevins on drums. Hiatt played this song when he was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live in 1989.
Hiatt's "dream band" proved to be unavailable, and he ended up cutting Slow Turning with his road band, the Goners, but the finished product proves he remembered well the lessons learned from Bring the Family.

Though we are basking in a UK heatwave, Hiatt’s thermometer was off the scale with this final track. Landreth led the encores with his “Congo Square,” his slightly softer vocals preceding a jazzier sound.
