Stewart was born at 507 Archway Road, Highgate, North London, on 10 January 1945, and in 1962, he began his musical career by busking with a harmonica. He joined The Dimensions as a vocalist and harmonica player in 1963. Stewart first joined Long John Baldry and the All Stars in 1964, then joined the Jeff Beck Group in 1967.
