S3-E3 was a protocol droid with masculine programming who served in the Galactic Republic's army during the Cold War, a conflict between the Sith Empire and the Republic. During the war he worked with the Republic Corps of Engineers, a branch of the army that specialized in mechanical maintenance. Near the end of the war, a detachment of the Corps was deployed on the Republic-held planet of Ord Mantell in the Bright Jewel system of the Mid Rim. Whilst stationed on the planet, he and all Republic forces aided the corrupt local government in fighting the Mantellian Separatist Movement.

On Ord Mantell, S3-E3 worked with the human corpsman Celestra, who was stationed in the Republic stronghold of Fort Garnik. The duo, along with several other engineers were sent to repair one of Garnik's external power generators which had been sabotaged by Separatists. However, the team was attacked by Separatists, and all but Celestra and S3-E3 were killed. S3-E3 fled into the Avilatan Badlands, while Celestra remained behind to defend the generator. There the droid waited by a road for any aid to pass by.

Eventually, a Republic-allied individual encountered the droid, and S3-E3 begged the individual to save Celestra and help fix the generator in order to save many lives at Fort Garnik. Agreeing, the operative successfully rescued Celestra and aided in repairing the generator by recovering her tools while she kept it stable.
