Warner Oland (born Johan Verner Ölund; October 3, 1879 – August 6, 1938) was a Swedish-American actor.His career included time on Broadway and numerous film appearances. He is most remembered for playing several Chinese and Chinese-American characters: Dr. Fu Manchu, Henry Chang in Shanghai Express, and, most notably, Honolulu Police detective Lieutenant Charlie Chan in 16 films.
Warner Oland. Actor: The Black Camel. Warner Oland was born Johan Verner Olund in the small village of Nyby in Bjurholm parish in the county of Vasterbotten, Sweden, on October 3, 1879. Bjurholm is situated about 60 kilometers outside the town of Umea. His family emigrated to the US on October 15, 1892. His father Jonas was a shopkeeper and his mother was Maria Johanna (nee Forsberg).

The Oriental detective was originally played by George Kuwa in The House Without a Key (1925) and Kamiyama Sojin in The Chinese Parrot (1927), both silent Pathe serials, and later by E.L. Park in a Fox Pictures talking feature, Behind That Curtain, (1929).
Warner Oland, famous as an actor in Hollywood Oriental roles, died today at 3 P. M. (9 A. M., E. S. T.), at the age of 57. Death came at a Stockholm hospital where he had been ill of pneumonia.
