John Joseph Patrick Ryan (December 30, 1920 – January 21, 1998), best known by his stage name, Jack Lord, was an American television, film and Broadway actor, director and producer. He starred as Steve McGarrett in the CBS television program Hawaii Five-O, which ran from 1968 to 1980.
Jack Lord (1920-1998) was best known for playing Steve McGarrett in Hawaii Five-O (1968), but also starred in movies, directed episodes of his show, and painted. He was born in New York, died in Honolulu, and was the first actor to play Felix Leiter in the James Bond films.

- He changed his name after being lost at sea. He was born John Joseph Patrick Ryan. In World War II, Ryan first served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
- The Merchant Marines gave him acting work, too. While in the Merchant Marines, Lord was selected to appear in training films. He enjoyed the process. After serving, he sought training from legendary acting teacher Sanford Meisner, at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York.
- He funded his acting studies by selling Cadillacs. To pay for those acting lessons, Lord worked as a car salesman. He apparently was quite skilled at it.
- He was an accomplished painter. In his youth, Lord also studied at NYU — where he had a football scholarship, no less — and earned a degree in Fine Arts.
