Jutra and Genie Award-winning actress Marie-Josée Croze struggled for many years in the Québec film industry before delivering breakthrough performances in Denis Villeneuve’s Maelström (2000) and Denys Arcand’s Les Invasions barbares (2003).
Known thanks to her popular films and television series, Marie-Josée Croze was awarded the lead role in Maelström in 1999 by Denis Villeneuve. It came to have a decisive influence on her career: she received awards worldwide, shot with Atom Egoyan and followed the path of art house cinema.
Adopted as a child by an alcoholic father and a mother who struggled with suicidal depression, Marie-Josée Croze is a striking performer with an understated, almost unspoken intensity who has admitted a fondness for characters with a dark side, “characters who fight.”
