In films from the late 1940s, he has worked mainly in his own country but made several appearances in American films in the 1960s, most notably opposite Frank Sinatra in the war film Von Ryan's Express, made in 1965.

He was so good in it that Hollywood took note and he eventually starred in some Hollywood productions such as THE PRIZE (1963) and VON RYAN'S EXPRESS (1965), among other titles.
