The gravelly voiced powerhouse behind Brooklyn's late-2010s drill movement, rapper Pop Smoke remade international drill scenes in his own image to become not only the face of the genre, but one of the biggest rappers in the world. His style imbued the clattering sonics of U.K. drill with his booming vocals, vivid local dialect, and assured flows, resulting in a braggadocio-laden and distinctly New York take on the rising genre. After blowing into the rap mainstream with the skittering "Welcome to the Party," he continued to gain momentum with volumes of his Meet the Woo mixtape series; with over 100 million streams of global anthems like "Dior" and "Element." He was fatally shot in a burglary of a Los Angeles mansion in February 2020. After his death, Pop Smoke continued to land international hits with his posthumous debut album, Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon. Wikipedia
