  1. Feb 5, 2023 · Do you have a bad attitude? Learn how to identify the signs of a negative mindset and how to improve it with positive thinking and actions. Find out the reasons behind your attitudes and how to exchange them for ones that make your life easier and more enjoyable.

    • It’s Your Way or the Highway. When you believe that it’s either your way or the highway, your attitude stinks. You are highly inflexible in accepting anything that isn’t your way, because your way is the only right way, right?
    • You Always Compare Yourself to Others. Do you always compare yourself to others? This can be in real life, when you compare how you are doing versus your family, friends, and colleagues when they share stories about their lives and their accomplishments.
    • You Look Down on Others. If you have a superiority complex and believe you are God’s gift to the world, you’ll look down on other people who don’t have what you have.
    • Everyone Annoys You. Another sign of having a negative and unhealthy attitude is when everyone annoys you. It annoys you when they are around you, what they do annoys you, and even what they say has the power to get on your nerves.

    • You have unreasonable expectations. Unreasonable expectations are often a sign of entitlement. People with unreasonable expectations may not empathize with the struggles or problems of other people.
    • You see everyone else as an enemy or competition. The world is dangerous, and everyone is out to harm you in some way. Or so you believe. They want to take advantage of you, take what you have, and work against you.
    • You tend to see the world in black and white. Right and wrong. Us and them. There are few shades of gray in your world, and you have a hard time imagining that things can be far more complex than they seem.
    • You demand respect without giving any. Many people don’t realize that there are two distinct variations of respect. The first is to hold another person in high esteem.
    • We dont want to be disappointed. Daring to hope for the best feels too vulnerable to us. We feel threatened, like a cornered animal. We’ve been disappointed by people or situations in the past and now “protect” ourselves by expecting the worst.
    • We’ve had role models (possibly our parents) with negative attitudes. We’ve picked up their approach towards life and made it our habit as well, rather than working on deliberately developing our personal, proactive, and resilient, perspective.
    • We dont want to be rejected. If we fear that other people might not approve of us, we decide (either consciously or unconsciously) to beat them to the punch and “not like them first”.
    • We think in black and white terms. If we can’t do something perfectly, we’re afraid to try doing it at all. If we can’t please everyone, we don’t see the point of being agreeable to anyone at all.
    • Self-Defeating Talk. Self-defeating talk is comprised of messages we send to ourselves which reduce our confidence, diminish our performance, lower our potential, and ultimately sabotage our success.
    • Negative Assumptions. A prevailing form of negative thinking is to take stock of a situation or an interaction and presume the negative. For many people, this “looking at the glass half empty” attitude is habitual and automatic.
    • Negative Comparison with Others. One of the easiest and most common ways to feel bad about oneself is to compare yourself unfavorably to others. We may be tempted to compare ourselves with those who have more accomplishments, seem more attractive, make more money, or boast more Facebook friends.
    • Negative Rumination about the Past. We should learn from the past, but not be stuck in it. Sometimes life circumstances and personal setbacks can haunt and prevent us from seeing our true potential and recognizing new opportunities.
