Produced between 1948 and 1951, the Porsche 356/2 was the first series production aluminum bodied sports car of Porsche after the creation of the 356-001 one-off prototype in Gmund Austria. It was built in limited numbers, making it a highly sought-after collector's item today.
The 356/2 had a split windshield, mechanical brakes, and was powered by a 1100cc, 40 horsepower, air-cooled engine with two Solex carburetors. With lessons learned from 356 No. 1, Porsche developed the 356/2 as a production-ready version. The biggest concession to useability was repositioning the engine back behind the rear wheels as the original VW design. Like 356 No. 1, 356/2 was built as two-seat roadster using VW parts.

Jun 26, 2023 · 1948 Porsche 356/2 Coupe. The Porsche engineers in Gmünd also planned to build a practical, year-round version of the 1948 356. In August 1948, plans were drawn for a rear-engine coupe using the VW drivetrain layout, and a new chassis design instead of the space frame that was used on the Roadster.
