The Lexington Cemetery was established in 1848 as a place of beauty and a public cemetery, in part to deal with burials from the cholera epidemic in the area.

Location: US 421, West Main St., Lexington. Incorporated in 1849, Lexington Cemetery was laid out as a natural landscape park. Both Confederate and Union soldiers are buried in this cemetery. Towering over Henry Clay's grave is a 120-foot monument surmounted by his statue.
The cemetery is located on the north side of W. Main Street (US 421) from Price Road to about 0.1 miles west of Newtown Pike (US 25). The cemetery was established in 1849. The Lexington National Cemetery is located along West Main Street on the grounds of the Lexington Cemetery.

Lexington Cemetery was the first rural cemetery in Lexington, Kentucky. The burial ground was originally established in 1849 on 40 acres of land but the acreage was eventually increased to 170 acres. At the entrance to the cemetery is a Romanesque style gatehouse built in 1890.
