By the 1970s, the cities of Texas City and League City, through aggressive annexation, began to encroach on Dickinson. Residents of the central area worked to incorporate the city in 1977. In the 1990s, the additional areas of town were annexed into the incorporated city.

Dickinson is conveniently located on Interstate 45 and Dickinson Bayou between Houston and Galveston. The city is located 20 minutes from the beach. Clear Lake Resort Area, Galveston Bay, the Johnson Space Center (NASA), as well as 3 major shopping malls are all within 10 miles.
Dickinson is the oldest mainland settlement in Galveston County with historic buildings and roots dating back to pioneer days.
