Presidential Dollar Coins - Golden $1 President Coins. The purpose of the Presidential Dollar Coin Program was to honor each US President by depicting them on a new one dollar coin. The planning of this program first began on May 17, 2005 when US Senator John E. Sununu (R-New Hampshire) introduced the idea in Senate Bill 1047.
In 2007, the first Presidential dollar coins were released, honoring former deceased United States presidents in the chronological order that they served the nation. The Presidential dollar series, which was signed into law in 2005, permitted the production of this series, which followed in the wake of the successful 50 States Quarters, a wildly popular series that spanned from 1999 through 2008.
The Presidential Dollar Coin Act The program was authorized under The Presidential $1 Coin Act (Public Law 109-145), and was signed on December 15, 2005 by President George W. Bush. The Act provided for the redesign and issuance of $1 coins honoring the former Presidents of the United States beginning January 1, 2007.
