- Development: The development stage is the first step in film production. This phase of the production process includes fleshing out the story idea, writing a draft of the script, and figuring out the financial logistics of the project.
- Pre-production: When you get the green light to start the pre-production stage, you’ll establish a production company and set up a production office. This is where the planning of your film shoot will take place.
- Production: The production stage, also known as principal photography, is when shooting begins. During this short timeframe, additional crew will be hired—like a script supervisor to check for script continuity while filming, and a property master to acquire and oversee any of your film’s props.
- Post-production: Post-production phase is when the audio and visual materials are cut together to create a film, and happens after principal shooting is complete.
- Building on an idea. Before you do anything – and I mean anything. You need to have an idea. That's right. You'll need to know what the film is even about.
- Writing the script. The next step is writing the script. You got the idea. Now you need to jot it down on paper. The script is where you'll put down the story, setting, and dialogue in linear form.
- Secure funding. You might have heard a rumour stating that films are expensive to produce? I'm sorry to say this, but the rumours are true. Filmmaking is a relatively expensive affair, and to produce a feature film; you'll need funding.
- Create a storyboard. When planning everything out, a storyboard is your knight in shiny armour. A storyboard is a sequence of drawings that'll help you map out and visualize the shots you plan to film.
- Become a film producer. Big production offices on studio lots and one-person production companies based out of living rooms share the same goal: Make a movie.
- Hire the cast and crew members. The size of the crew depends on the budget and scope of the film. For indie projects with small budgets, people can play multiple roles, but every project needs a film director, director of photography, casting director, costume designer, set designer, lighting designer, and sound designers.
- Secure locations. Unless you can shoot your whole film on a soundstage, you’ll need a location scout and location manager to find the right locations, obtain the necessary permissions, permits, parking locations for cast and crew, and food service.
- Plan every detail of the shoot. Once you have a final script, you can create storyboards to help you envision exactly how you’ll shoot that script. “Pre-production is finding the look of the film.
