The Friends promote understanding and appreciation of the Refuge and assist the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in meeting its mandates. The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge itself consists of 59,020 acres of unique habitats in the ancient Wichita Mountains in southwestern Oklahoma.
Our Goals. Educate the public and decision makers on local, national, and international levels about the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. Assist the refuge in accomplishing its mission through wildlife management and habitat improvement projects.
The Wichita Mountains are rocky promontories and rounded hills made of red and black igneous rocks, light-colored sedimentary rocks, and boulder conglomerates. The Wichita Mountains were formed in four distinct geologic episodes following a failed continental rift.
