  1. Apr 19, 2021 · An introduction to surfing in LA. Surfing in LA is the stuff of bucket lists. A colossal city – the largest in all of California, no less – the metropolis spills down from the well-to-do rises of Beverly Hills and into the Pacific Ocean. It covers a whopping 60 miles of coastline in all.

    • County Line. Just north of the Los Angeles County Line, this is where LA surfing starts. There’s a point at the northern end of the beach that delivers the most consistent (right) wave, especially on bigger swells.
    • Zuma Beach. Not a great spot for beginners, Zuma is more popular as a family, summertime hangout beach than a surf spot. The waves here are typically heavy and break quickly and close to shore.
    • Point Dume. This is not the easiest spot to access, the point is located in front of private property and requires a 20-minute (totally legal) hike along the beach from the parking at Point Dume State Beach near Westward Beach.
    • Malibu Surfrider Beach. Malibu without a doubt has some of the best surfing in the Los Angeles area, which of course means it’s constantly crowded. These next spots also work best during the summer (March to October) which drives up the appeal even more.
    • El Porto - Manhattan Beach. El Porto is exactly what you picture when you think “Southern California beach” - white sands, volleyball courts, and lots of sun-loving types on hot days.
    • Redondo Beach & Hermosa Beach. These charming coastal communities brim with the essence of SoCal beach culture, from laid-back bars to cozy coffee shops and scores of surfers (and those just trying to look the part) chilling along the waterfront promenade known as The Strand, the 22-mile path that runs along the coast.
    • Ocean Park. Located at the end of Main Street in Santa Monica, this beach was once called Pacific Ocean Park as a nod to the nautical-themed amusement park at the end of the pier; nowadays, some refer to it as Ocean Park.
    • Venice Beach. Venice Beach is a fun and quirky spot to catch mostly mellow waves. “The surf here and at Pacific Ocean Park are pretty similar with easy access and good breaks,” says Wagner.
