A day trip to the top is a journey that snakes and climbs through nearly 9,000 feet of elevation gain, from the high plains of Denver through five climate zones to the 14,264-foot summit of Mount Blue Sky, one of 54 peaks in Colorado that soar to 14,000 feet and above – the famous “fourteeners.”
Length: 49 miles. Driving time: 2 hours. The Mount Blue Sky (formerly Mount Evans) Scenic Byway climbs more than 7,000 feet in just 28 miles, reaching an altitude of 14,130 feet. Bought the $12 Timed Entry Permit & summited Mt. Blue Sky (formerly Mt. Evans) from the Summit Lake Park TH. Mt. Blue Sky had about 4 inches of snow, but the trail is tracked-out & easy to follow up & over Mt. Spalding. Once you gain the West Ridge on Evans, the terrain is rocky, slow moving & route-finding can be a little tricky.
