The trail itself is very well-maintained (thank you Forest Service and Sitka Trail Works!), clear to follow, and surrounded by beautiful scenery (waterfalls, muskeg, mountains, streams, lakes, undergrowth) every step of the way.

The Herring Cove Trail is 1.4 miles long. It begins at Parking Area At Trailhead and joins the Beaver Lake Trail at Beaver Lake. The trail is open for the following uses: Hiking, XC Skiing/Snowshoeing.
The trail climbs through an open forest of hemlock, Sitka spruce and yellow cedar. The mostly gravel trail runs through open forest and parallels the Beaver Lake outlet stream and associated marshes and muskegs. The trail leads to several fishing platforms along the southern edge of the lake.

The Herring Cove trail parallels a stream with a series of waterfalls. After one climbs the first steep hillside, the trail flattens out in a glacially formed "hanging valley" with large old growth trees. A 100'+ waterfall is at the top of the valley.
Located 6 miles southeast of Sitka, the Herring Cove Trailhead is a popular hike due to its lower elevation change and diverse landscape (not to mention the great grayling fishing opportunities at Beaver Lake).
